New BlackBerry

OTTAWA: Although not yet launched in North America, the new BlackBerry smartphones were already on sale online on Friday, stirring bidding frenzy.

The sellers said they got the new smart phones at launch events in New York, Toronto, Dubai, London and Johannesburg. Journalists and analysts who attended the event received a BlackBerry Z10, which sells for $ 599.

The auction website eBay online bids soared to $ 3,000 for two "very rare" white Z10 devices, according to the British seller. Another New York was included in $ 1,775. Most of them however went for about $ 1,100.

Z10 devices began selling in Britain on Thursday and will be released in Canada on February 5, but not available until mid-March in the key U.S. market.

Chief executive Thorsten Heins said the reason for the delay in the U.S. is "a bit long" testing process, but said some companies are taking pre-orders. Verizon is marketing the phone in the U.S. for $ 199 with a two year plan.

In one of the biggest releases of the mobile phone industry, the Canadian company Research In Motion cellular Wednesday launched the highly anticipated BlackBerry 10 handset at an event in New York. Also renamed the company after their BlackBerry phones.

The BlackBerry 10 uses the QNX operating system, the BlackBerry acquired two years ago. The phone's launch has been delayed considerably, and some analysts believe that the launch may have come a little late. BlackBerry however, has managed to sign major service providers in the U.S., a market in rapid decline in the company, to sell the new phone.
