The Easier Way of How to Unsubscribe the Mailing Lists in Gmail

To unsubscribe the mails from email newsletters Gmail has made it easy for you and bulk mail. open a message and click on the “unsubscribe” link so automatically Gmail will  remove your email address from the mailing list. However this option is available on the Gmail website and if you are not using Gmail on the mobile phone or accessing Gmail through an app like Outlook/ Dropbox Mail Box.

For example if there is third-party services Unroll.me, that let's you remove yourself from unsolicited bulk email but you have to grant access to entire Gmail mailbox and Google contacts to them. The service is convenient but would be willing to give full access to my email account to the third-party.

Christian Heilmann’s tweet Feature request for Gmail: Find and follow the unsubscribe link automatically in all highlighted mails prompted to research the topic in more detail and it turned out that building an automated system for unsubscribing from bulk email is not difficult. It looks like this:

How to Unsubscribe from Bulk Mail in Gmail

I have a simple Google Script that parses the content of bulk emails and find the unsubscribe link. If the link is found script opens the link and the email is unsubscribed. The bulk sender would require you to send a message in some cases, to special email address in order to unsubscribe the script can do that.

You will not grant the access to Gmail account to any service, you can unsubscribe without opening the email you can add emails to the unsubscribe queue from any email client including desktop and mobile apps. How to get Start:

1. Copy the Gmail Unsubscriber sheet to the Google Drive.

2. Go to Gmail menu in the sheet and choose the Authorize. The script will access to the Gmail account. It is an open source Google Script that runs in your own Drive not a single byte of data is shared with anyone.

3. Choose Start and pick a name for your Gmail label from the same menu. Save the changes.

The Gmail Unsubscriber program is initialized and running in the background. Apply the Unsubscribe label to any Gmail message and automatically you will be unsubscribed in 10-15 minutes. Everything is logged in the Google Sheet so that you can know what is happening behind the scenes.

How Gmail Unsubscribes from Mailing Lists

The Bulk email senders include a List-Unsubscribe field in the message header that contains a URL/ email address to unsubscribe from mailing list. Here we have a screenshot:

We can also view the details by opening any bulk message inside the Gmail and choosing “Show Original” from the menu. In some cases, the unsubscribe link may includes the message body with the anchor text like “click here to unsubscribe” the script is to recognize all such links, it opens them and removes your email address from the mailing list.
