In a move that will facilitate the visa process and help increase tourist arrivals in India, the Union government is all set to launch electronic visa this month by some 40 countries, including the United States, Japan, Germany, Russia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Philippines, among others.

The government is also likely to extend visa on arrival (VOA) facility to Spain, Italy and France early next year. Recently, the facility has been extended to America, Australia and Fiji. While the original plan was to extend the mail service visas for most countries - except five fifty-five countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Somalia - later decided to begin the installation in a way phases.

All arrangements, including software for the system, are ready and become operational in nine international airports - Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Goa. According to the government's decision, all countries, except for a few in the "previous list" would be put on the e-visa regime in the next two years. It is expected that the e-visa to give a big boost to the arrival of foreign tourists in the country. About 5,170,000 foreign tourists visited India during January-September. Thirteen countries currently enjoy the facilities of visa-on-arrival, including South Korea, Japan, Finland, Singapore, New Zealand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Laos
