How to Make the Screen-cast Movies of the iPhone or iPad with QuickTime

We know that the Mac ships with a screen-casting software that can be used for recording movies of computer screen quickly. We can record the microphone audio along with the video, there is an option to show/ hide the clicks during the screen recording and the movies can be exported in HD formats.This app is called as QuickTime Player.

If you have upgraded the Mac to OS X Yosemite, we can use the QuickTime Player software to record the screen of iOS device in 2 steps. We iPhone/ iPad running iOS 8 and a Lightning to USB cable it is the same cable that you are currently using to connect your iOS device to the computer.


QuickTime as an iOS Screen Recorder

Step 1 : In first step Connect the iPhone to the computer through 8-pin Lightning to USB cable. But this will not work with older iOS devices that are using 30-pin connector.


Step 2 : In the second step Open the QuickTime Player on your Mac and then choose the “New Movie Recording” from the File menu. If we want to record screen casts of desktop, choose the “New Screen Recording” option.

Step 3 : In the third step Click the arrow near to the red record button and choose iPhone/ iPad as the source camera. You can also select your device name in the Microphone section to record any audio coming out of your iOS device.

Once you done with recording the iOS screen you can use the File -> Export menu in the QuickTime Player to save the movie in .mov format at 720p/ 1080p resolution that can be uploaded to YouTube without any conversion.

iOS Screen casting without the Mac

The feature is available only with QuickTime on Mac OS X Yosemite and relatively requires newer device running iOS 8.

However if we are using Windows, running on older version of Mac OS X, we can record the iOS screen-casts with the help of apps like Air-server, Reflector or X-Mirage. Airplay is built into iOS and Mac OS X. This apps will use the the Airplay technology to mirror anything on iOS screen to Mac/ Windows computer over a wireless local network.
